Where to Eat in Girona?

THE BEST RESTAURANTS IN THE OLD CENTER

If you’re visiting Girona, get ready for a culinary journey that will leave you wanting more.

This city is not only famous for its medieval charm and impressive cathedral but also for its diverse gastronomic scene.

From charming little spots in the old town to dreamy terraces with stunning views, Girona offers options for every taste. Craving traditional tapas, Catalan dishes, or an innovative Michelin-star-worthy menu?

In this article, I’ll show you where to eat in the old town, with options for every preference: from traditional restaurants to perfect places for tapas, budget-friendly menus, or romantic dinners on charming terraces.

And the best part? Even though these spots are in the most touristic area of the city, they’re the same restaurants locals go to.

So, don’t worry about falling into a tourist trap!

WINE’T

This charming restaurant, located on the city’s most popular street, features a new terrace that has always been my favorite spot in the old town. Dining here feels like stepping into a vacation atmosphere with a captivating medieval touch.

It’s not just the terrace that stands out—the excellent value for money genuinely surprised me.

Their specialty is tapas and wines, though on weekends they offer a menu that’s definitely worth trying.

They’re open Tuesday to Saturday in the evenings and also at lunchtime on weekends. Since the terrace is small, it’s best to book in advance to secure a spot.

Even though it’s located in the heart of the Jewish Quarter, the street becomes peaceful at night, making this restaurant the perfect retreat to relax in a unique setting.

vii,tapes i platillos

Many of you may know that one of the reasons Girona is famous is because of “El Celler de Can Roca”, which was considered the best restaurant in the world for years. With a waiting list of over 130,000 people, this excellent three-Michelin-starred restaurant recently opened a small venue in the city’s old town.

So, if your dream is to enjoy a gastronomic experience with the signature Roca touch, you’re in luck—at “VII, Tapes i Platillos”, you can make a reservation from one day to the next.

That said, don’t expect a fine dining restaurant. The concept here is to offer traditional food in a very classic setting.

They are open from Thursday to Monday, from 1:00 PM to 11:00 PM, with a more limited menu in the evening.

The cuisine is inspired by the “Bar Roca” of the 1970s, offering everything from fried dishes and small stews to confits and sandwiches, all with a personal touch. They also place a strong emphasis on natural wine.

The location is excellent—one of the most beautiful squares in the historic center, with a very intimate atmosphere. Plus, the prices are as tempting as the food itself.

After all, “Can Roca” is always synonymous with “good”—good quality, good food, good ambiance, and in this case, a good price!

casa flora

If you’re looking for traditional food at a great price, this cozy family-run restaurant in the heart of the old town is an ideal choice.

Sonia, always welcoming with a warm smile, will make you feel right at home.

She’s the reason the restaurant opened here—the property belonged to her grandmother. When the space became available, Sonia and her husband, chef Quique Zapata, moved from Barcelona to start this project.

Quique, with experience in luxury restaurants in Barcelona, blends traditional cuisine with creative touches, using high-quality local products.

Casa Flora is open daily from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., offering a delicious “Menu of the Day” with a variety of starters, mains, and desserts. They are also open on Friday ans saturday nights. Due to its popularity and small size, it’s recommended to book in advance.

Another highlight is the price: between €20 and €30 per person—a fantastic value considering its location and quality.

If you’re lucky enough to get a table with river views, the experience will be even more special. But even without the views, you’ll leave satisfied.

ENJOY IT

If you’re traveling with family and need a restaurant that suits everyone’s tastes, this is the perfect spot. With tropical décor, river views, and a terrace overlooking the liveliest square in the old town, it offers a great atmosphere for a delicious meal.

They open at 11:30 a.m., which is convenient if you’re not a fan of Spain’s typically late meal times.

The menu is varied, featuring tasty tapas, burgers, pizzas, and salads.

Notably, you won’t find fast-food chains like McDonald’s in this area, so this restaurant is a similar option but with quality ingredients. However, prices are slightly higher, ranging from €20 to €30 per person.

They only accept reservations for groups of 10 or more, so on weekends or special days, you might have to wait. If it’s full, try your luck at “Txots”, located in the same square. It offers a similar style, also with a terrace and stunning river views.

l’Alqueria

Though not in the old town, this restaurant is perfect for those arriving by train or looking to enjoy an authentic paella. It’s the only place in Girona specializing in this dish—a must-visit spot!

They describe themselves as a “small embassy of Valencian cuisine,” and their paellas truly stand out. They offer over 30 varieties of rice dishes and paellas, along with “fideuà”—not traditionally Valencian but a must-have in Catalonia, where it originated.

The restaurant is open only for lunch from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. (they know paella isn’t ideal for dinner!) and operates from Tuesday to Sunday. The average price is €35–€45.

Due to its exclusivity, prices are higher, but it’s worth it if you want to taste the best paella in the city.

LE BISTROT

This restaurant is a must-visit classic in Girona’s old town.

It offers a wide variety of traditional Catalan dishes, including salads, crepes, pizzas, and meats, all prepared with regional ingredients.

Its biggest draw is the terrace, set in a unique location considered one of Spain’s most romantic spots—and a filming location for the famous “Game of Thrones”series.

Enjoying a glass of regional wine with Catalan cheeses and cured meats is the perfect summer night plan for both tourists and locals.

Prices are reasonable, especially given its prime location. While its cuisine isn’t as refined as Casa Flora’s, it still offers excellent value for money.

As a local classic, it had to be included in this guide to the old town’s best restaurants.

DIVINIUM

If you’re looking for an exclusive experience with top-quality cuisine, this Michelin-starred restaurant (well deserved!) is undoubtedly your place.

Located in the city center, inside the emblematic “Casino de Girona”, it never disappoints. In fact, quite the opposite—it keeps outdoing itself.

From traditional cuisine to international flavors, they offer a fusion of meticulously crafted dishes—modern, creative, sophisticated, and full of surprising flavors.

From appetizers to desserts, every dish is outstanding.

They are open from Tuesday to Saturday, from 1:30 PM to 3:15 PM and from 8:30 PM to 10:30 PM. Prices range from €65 to €150, depending on the menu option you choose.

No matter your taste, Girona always has something delicious to offer. Whether you’re after a gourmet experience or a cozy spot to share tapas and good wine, you’ll find a culinary scene designed to delight every palate.

If you’re looking for an authentic experience and want to explore the city like a true local, I highly recommend joining our tapas tour.
