Perfect guide to planning your visit to Girona.

Connections, transportation options, and tips to help you enjoy your trip from the very first moment

Girona, one of the most charming cities in Catalonia, is easily accessible from many places in Spain and Europe thanks to its excellent connections by train, road, plane, and even international bus routes. Below you’ll find a clear and detailed guide on how to reach Girona in the way that best suits your trip.

Getting to Girona by Train

The train is one of the fastest and most comfortable ways to reach Girona.

From Barcelona

  • AVE/AVANT: 38 minutes.
  • Departures from Barcelona Sants roughly every 30 minutes.
  • Highly recommended for quick day trips.

From Madrid

  • Direct AVE Madrid–Girona: ~3 h 40 min.
  • You can also transfer in Barcelona.

From France
High-speed TGV trains connect Girona with:

  • Perpignan
  • Narbonne
  • Montpellier
  • Paris (with a transfer)

Girona’s train station is less than a 10-minute walk from the historic center.

Getting to Girona by Plane

Girona–Costa Brava Airport (GRO) is located 15 km from the city.

Typical flights
The airport mainly operates European flights, especially low-cost airlines (like Ryanair depending on the season).

How to get from the airport to Girona

  • Direct bus: 20–25 minutes to Girona station.
  • Taxi: around 20 minutes.
  • Car rental: a convenient option if you plan to explore the Costa Brava or the rest of Girona Province.

Getting to Girona by Road

Girona is very well connected by highways and main roads.

Main routes

  • AP-7 / E-15 (Mediterranean Motorway): connects Girona with Barcelona (100 km south) and France (La Jonquera to the north). Currently toll-free.
  • N-II: a longer alternative, but with fewer trucks than the AP-7. Always free.
  • C-65 and C-66: access from the Costa Brava and inland Catalonia.

Parking
The historic center has restricted access zones. Recommended parking areas:

  • Free parking:
    • La Copa Parking
    • Park-and-ride lots (such as Domeny or the one near O Cines)
  • On Sundays, it is often possible to park for free in green zones or loading/unloading areas near the old town.

Getting to Girona by Bus

There are several bus lines:

Barcelona–Girona:

  • Sagalés: offers a direct bus service from Barcelona Airport to Girona.

Journey time: about 2–2.5 hours.

Several departures per day, though less frequent than trains.

  • TEISA: operates intercity lines connecting Girona Province with Barcelona.

They have offices in Barcelona (c/ Roger de Llúria), suggesting they run routes from the city.

Their website indicates regular routes from Barcelona to Girona and nearby towns.

Costa Brava–Girona

  • Connections from various Costa Brava towns.

International connections

  •  Buses from French or Belgian cities depending on season and company.

Buses usually arrive at the central station, next to the train and AVE services.
