MEDIEVAL JEWISH LEGACY: girona + besalú

Visit the province
of Girona and explore

Jewish history

In this private tour, you’ll have the opportunity to get an in -depth look at the Jewish history of  Girona province, home to two of Catalonia’s most significant Jewish heritage sites: Girona and Besalú.

We’ll start the journey in Besalú, a charming medieval village just half an hour away, arriving by private car for a more comfortable experience.

At the entrance of this small town, you’ll be delighted by its remarkable and fascinating Romanesque bridge, where you’ll find exceptional pieces of Jewish heritage in Catalonia: a 12th-century Mikveh and traces of a synagogue closed in the 13th century.

It’s a true privilege to explore the interior of this Mikveh, as it’s the only one of its kind found in the Spanish state and one of the ten in Europe.

Usually closed to the public, it’s only possible to visit individually with an official Licensed Tour guide of Catalonia.

After exploring this picturesque village, we’ll return to Girona, take a lunch break, and continue the journey.

Girona, with Roman roots, has shaped its cultural richness over the centuries due to its strategic location.

We’ll wander through the narrow streets of this part of the city, also known as “el Call,” which in the Middle Ages was one of Europe’s largest Jewish quarters.

A visit to the Jewish museum will help you understand the significance of the Jewish community in this prominent city.

Come and enjoy this enriching experience exploring the medieval heritage of this charming city!
